Compare Nixon's policies of engagment to foreign policy strategies during the Cold War

Whose foreign policy strategies do you want to compare with Nixon's policies?

I need to campare Nixon's policies of engagement with foreign policy stratagies used during the Cold War.

You didn't clarify your original question.

Are you asking about the U.S. foreign policy strategies? The Soviet Union's? China's? Please explain whose foreign policy strategies you need to compare with Nixon's policies of engagement?

What do you know about Nixon's policies? What do you know about the other foreign policy strategies?

That is all of the information I have, and that is why I am having such a hard time. I think I am camparing Nixon's policies of enagaement with Nixon's foreign policy duirng the Cold War.

Here is the info I have found so far, but I am not sure that I am going in the right direction.

Nixon's accomplishments in foreign policy included the reopening of direct communications with China in 1972 after a 21-year lapse in relations and his May 1972 visit to Moscow, the first by a U.S. president. His trip yielded a U.S.-Soviet strategic arms limitation agreement, a bilateral trade accord, and plans for joint scientific and space cooperation.

Thanks for clarifying your question.

You're heading in the right direction. Nixon had previously been a hardliner and strongly anti-Communist. He surprised everyone when he became the first President to visit what we then called "Red" China.

This is what else I have found.

Nixon's policy of engagement with the Communists was called detente. Rather than military confrontation, Nixon championed diplomatic conversations. Nixon established relations with China and used that as a wedge against the Soviet Union. was tricky in the arena of foreign relations. Nixon ended the Vietnam War, went to China, and started the nuclear arms reduction treaties. Nixon's policy of detente lead directly to the end of the cold war.

This looks good -- except for this sentence which doesn't seem to fit the rest of your paragraph: " was tricky in the arena of foreign relations.

Also -- I wouldn't say that Nixon's policy of detente lead "directly" to the end of the Cold War because it actually ended 15 years after Nixon left office.

Now -- you need to compare Nixon's policies with those of previous administrations that did more saber-rattling than participating in detente.

Thank you for all your help. NOw I know what direction I need to go with this assignment.

You're very welcome. Good luck! :-)

I have the same assignment due and I still do not have a clue what direction I need to go. :(
