I think the writer that you're supposed to critique is placing too much weight on the city boy attending a rural university. I'm also a Chicagoan who attended a rural university (University of Illinois) that was out in the cornfields. Believe me, in a large university, you don't see cornfields or smell the hogs. Although a city university may have more diversity, midwestern state university have people from all backgrounds -- not just small towns.
It is hard to say who is more likely to conform. Each has factors that might increase conformity.
Even though John had more friends, his isolation from these friends might make him more likely to conform to to others establish new friends. However, if the hometown bonds remain strong, he would be less likely to conform.
It also depends on how strongly the previous norms have been internalized — how much the person accepts them as his/her own rather than perceiving them as being imposed from outside sources.
The description does not disinguish between being alone (not with others) and be lonely (longing for greater relations with others). How satisfied is Donnie with his introverted lifestyle?
