You are to evaluate how well the author used the points described in the text book about conformity and persuasion to explain their reasons for selecting Donnie. In 200 to 300 words. I think Donnie would more likely be persuaded by peer pressures. Although he's the same age as John, he sounds like he's a loner with limited support system. He's from a big city and he's attending a school in a rural area. Even though Iowa State is a bigschool, it's :out in the corn fields", and that will be very strange for Donnie. According to the text, conformity is changing your attitudes or behaviors to adhere to social norms, which are explicit and implicit rules that reflect social expectations and influence the ways people behave in social situations. I think the social norms would be very strong at a rural university because the rural communities tend to be more "closed" and so the norms are stronger because they're not diluted by lots of outside influences. So when Donnie joins the students there, they are more likely to influence him than the students at a looser group at New York University. According to the factors of conformity in the book, Donnie is more likely to need to feel he fits in and belongs because he didn't have a large support group at home. John had more friends and was more casual, so I think he'd have less of a need to "fit in" at his new college. Also the book says low self-esteem increases conformity. I think Donnie has a low self-esteem because he sounded like he was a bit of a loner. Also, I don't think Donnie had a lot of experience making friends. So as he began making friends at Iowa State, he's going to want to be like his new friends more than John would.

Although I haven't read the scenario you're describing, it looks as though you've analyzed this situation well.

John is an 18 year-old freshman at New York University. John was the starting quarterback at his high school in a small town in Indiana. He enjoys playing sports and hanging out with friends. John has always been poplar and done well in school and sports. Once he is comfortable in his surroundings he can be confident in what he is doing.

Donnie is an 18 year-old freshman from Chicago attending Iowa State. Donnie spends most of his time playing his guitar and writing music. In high school he had a few close friends but his attention was mainly focused onhis studies and his music. He has little trouble expressing himself and enjoys doing so on stage while playing in his band. Donnie is determined to earn a degree and find a career in playing, writing, or producing music.

I wrote that I believed that John would be more likely to conform. I am to write a 200 to 300 word critique of the response that I sent it was written by a fellow student, which argues that Donnie would be more likely to conform. That does not mean that you are to argue against Donnie or explain why the author is wrong or right. You are to evaluate how well the author used the points described in the text book about conformity and persuasion to explain their reasons for selecting Donnie.

Thanks for the explanation. Obviously, one could argue either way since a few sentences doesn't adequately describe any person.

I agree with you, that it seems more likely that John would conform to his new university setting. You'll need to find information in your text book to support your thesis.

I am to evaluate how well the author used the points described in the text book about conformity and persuasion to explain their reasons for selecting Donnie.

This is who the other fellow student picked. I am supose to evaluate this.

I think Donnie would more likely be persuaded by peer pressures. Although he's the same age as Joh, he sounds like he's a loner with limited support system. He's from a big city and he's attending a schol in a rural area. Even though Iowa State is a big school, its still "out in the corn fields", and that will be very strange for Donnie.

According to the text, conformity is changing your attitudes or behaviors to adhere to social norms, which are explicit and implicit rules that reflect social exprectations and influence the ways people behave in social situations. Accpording to the factors conformity in the book, Donnie is more likely to need to feel he fits in and belongs because he didn't have a large support group at home. John had more friends and was more casual, so I think he'd have less of a need to "fit in" at his new college. Also the book says low self-esteem increases conformity. The point of this assignment is for you to go back over this part of your text and make sure that this argument is supported by this text. Did the writer ignore some points that would negate some of her/his arguments?

I think the writer that you're supposed to critique is placing too much weight on the city boy attending a rural university. I'm also a Chicagoan who attended a rural university (University of Illinois) that was out in the cornfields. Believe me, in a large university, you don't see cornfields or smell the hogs. Although a city university may have more diversity, midwestern state university have people from all backgrounds -- not just small towns.

It is hard to say who is more likely to conform. Each has factors that might increase conformity.

Even though John had more friends, his isolation from these friends might make him more likely to conform to to others establish new friends. However, if the hometown bonds remain strong, he would be less likely to conform.

It also depends on how strongly the previous norms have been internalized — how much the person accepts them as his/her own rather than perceiving them as being imposed from outside sources.

The description does not disinguish between being alone (not with others) and be lonely (longing for greater relations with others). How satisfied is Donnie with his introverted lifestyle?

This probably won't help you make a decision, but it should make you more aware of the level of complexity of human interactions.

I hope this helps a litle. Thanks for asking.

As human beings, we are receiving information fro mthe outside world on an almost continuous basis. However, we only accept so much of that information. which theorist of the big five is this statement related to?

The author used points from the textbook on conformity and persuasion to explain their reasons for selecting Donnie. They mentioned that Donnie would be more likely to be persuaded by peer pressures based on several factors. The author pointed out that Donnie is a loner with a limited support system, whereas John seems to have more friends and a more casual attitude. This aligns with the factor mentioned in the textbook that low self-esteem increases conformity, as the author suggests that Donnie may have low self-esteem and less experience making friends.

The author also considered the social norms that would be stronger at a rural university compared to a more diverse university like New York University. They mentioned that rural communities tend to be more "closed" and have stronger norms due to fewer outside influences. This aligns with the textbook's definition of conformity as changing attitudes or behaviors to adhere to social norms.

Furthermore, the author highlighted the need for Donnie to feel like he fits in and belongs, stating that he didn't have a large support group at home. This again aligns with the textbook which emphasizes the role of social expectations and influences in conformity.

In evaluating how well the author used these points from the textbook, it can be said that they effectively applied the concepts of conformity and persuasion to explain why Donnie might be more susceptible to peer pressures at a rural university like Iowa State. The author's use of specific examples and reasoning based on the textbook's principles supports their argument. The provided analysis provides a thorough explanation of why Donnie's background and personality traits make him more likely to conform to the social norms of his new environment.
