What is an analogy?

a way something is like something else.

Your arteries and veins are analogous to the water supply and wastewater piping system in your city :)

That is an analogy. I did not say it was good analogy :)

Analogy Definition:

"n. a comparison between two things, typically on the basis of their structure and for the purpose of explanation or clarification.

- a correspondence or partial similarity.
- a thing that is comparable to something else in significant respects.
- Logic
a process of arguing from similarity in known respects to similarity in other respects."

This above is a Google definition.

Some examples are:

- 1. "Kitchen is to cooking as bedroom is to sleeping."
- 2. "You are as annoying as nails on a chalkboard. You must be pretty annoying for someone to say that."
- 3. "My writing is to me, as flying is to a bird."
- 4. "She was quiet as a mouse."
- 5. "A gang of boys is like a pack of wolves."
- 6. "White symbolizes purity and goodness, like black symbolizes impurity and evil."
- 7. "He was as tall as a six-foot, three-inch tree."
- 8. "Her hair glistened in the rain like a nose hair after a sneeze."
- 9. "It was an American tradition, like fathers chasing kids around with power tools."
- 10. "He was as lame as a duck. Not the metaphorical lame duck, either, but a real duck that was actually lame, maybe from stepping on a land mine or something."

The examples above are analogies that are easy to understand from different websites.

I hope that all of this helps you understand analogies!!! :)

An analogy is a comparison between two things that are similar in some way, but are otherwise different. It helps to explain or illustrate a concept, idea, or situation by pointing out its similarities to something more familiar. For example, comparing the human brain to a computer is an analogy to explain how they both process and store information.
