I have to construct my initials J and E geometrically. I drew a base line with two points. Then I drew a line through them. I thought this was right for the E but it's not. What am I doing wrong? I do know how to make a parallel and perpendicular lines.

You drew a line through two points? That's certainly the first step, but it's not the letter E.

You still need to draw three perpendicular lines; two at the ends of your line, and one in the middle.

Thank you, but what do I do for the letter J? Do I do the same thing with a perpendicular line and add a ray for the small part of thwe J?

how about a line, and then a semicircle? Just draw a short perpendicular to the line (don't actually draw it), and then, using that as the radius, draw a semicircle touching the end of the line.

It sounds like you are on the right track, but let's make sure we are following the proper steps to construct the initials geometrically.

To construct the letter "J" geometrically, you can follow these steps:

1. Start by drawing a horizontal base line. This will act as the bottom of the letter.

2. Decide on the desired height for the letter. From the right end of the base line, draw a vertical line upwards to determine the height of the letter "J."

3. To create the curved part of the "J," draw a small arc that connects the top of the vertical line to the base line. This arc will form the right side of the letter.

For the letter "E," the process is a bit different. Here's how you can construct the letter "E" geometrically:

1. Start with a horizontal base line, just like with the letter "J."

2. From the right end of the base line, draw a vertical line upwards to determine the height of the letter "E."

3. Next, draw a horizontal line slightly above the base line, starting from the vertical line you just created. This line should extend towards the left side of the base line.

4. Finally, draw another vertical line downwards from the end of the horizontal line you just drew, parallel to the first vertical line. This will complete the letter "E."

Remember, it's important to use your compass and ruler to ensure precise measurements and accurate construction. If you need to create parallel and perpendicular lines, you can use your ruler to draw them. For parallel lines, simply measure and mark the desired distance from the original line, then use the ruler to connect the marked points. For perpendicular lines, use your compass to draw a circle centered at the desired point of intersection, then draw lines from the center point to where the circle intersects the original line.
