Of the books in a library, 1/3 came from Robbie's collection and 15 came from Marta's. Of the rest, 15 were Elena's 1/5 were Winfield's, and 5 were purchased from the bookstore. How many book are there in the library?

I have a question. It says 1/5 of the remainder was from Winfield, so why would it be 0.2x?

Thanks 4 the help! Also, to Anonymous, 1/5 = 2/10 = 20/100 = 0.2. :))

It says 1/5 OF THE REMAINDER though.

I got 60.

x*1/3 + 15 + 15 + 1/5*[x-(x*1/3+15)] + 5 = x
When you simplify you get 60?
I am not sure if I am right.

Yuh it'z 60

To find the total number of books in the library, we can add up the number of books that came from each person and the number of books purchased from the bookstore.

First, let's calculate the number of books that came from Robbie's collection. It is given that 1/3 of the books in the library came from Robbie, so we need to find what fraction of the total number of books that represents. Let's represent the total number of books as "x".

Number of books from Robbie's collection = (1/3) * x

Next, we know that 15 books came from Marta's collection.

Number of books from Marta's collection = 15

Now, let's find the number of books that came from Elena's collection. It is mentioned that the remaining books (rest) came from different people and sources. We can calculate the rest by subtracting the known quantities from the total number of books (x).

Rest = x - (Number of books from Robbie's collection + Number of books from Marta's collection)

Now, we can split the rest further. According to the information given, 15 books were Elena's and 1/5 of the rest were Winfield's.

Number of books from Elena's collection = 15
Number of books from Winfield's collection = (1/5) * Rest

Lastly, it's stated that 5 books were purchased from the bookstore.

Number of books purchased from the bookstore = 5

Now, we can put it all together:
Total number of books in the library = Number of books from Robbie's collection + Number of books from Marta's collection + Number of books from Elena's collection + Number of books from Winfield's collection + Number of books purchased from the bookstore

Total number of books in the library = (1/3) * x + 15 + 15 + 5 + (1/5) * Rest

Since we are asked to find the total number of books in the library, we do not have enough information to solve this equation without knowing the value of "Rest".

0.333x + 15 + 15 + 0.2x + 5 = x

0.533x + 35 = x

35 = x - 0.533x

35 = 0.467x

75 = x
