Bangladesh used to be known as East Pakistan. It was part of the territory of British India until 1947, when India gained independence from British colonial rule. At that time, the subcontinent of India was divided into two separate countries: India and Pakistan. East Pakistan, geographically located in the eastern part of what is now Bangladesh, was one of the two regions that constituted Pakistan. However, due to cultural, linguistic, and political differences, East Pakistan fought for its own identity and independence. After a nine-month long war in 1971, East Pakistan successfully seceded from Pakistan and became the independent country of Bangladesh.
