How many different N-O bond lengths would you expect to observe in the actual structure of NO3− and why?

  1. Only one because all of the bond lengths are the same. We can't draw the actual structures so we draw several "resonance structures" and all of us understand that the "real" bond structure is an average of all those we have drawn but isn't any one of them.
