3/4 x 1/2 = 3/8 Need to write a word problem for this equation, and then my daughter has to draw a model to show the product. She doesn't believe that the equation I gave her is useable so I am turning to here.

Thank you!

This site shows how to multiply fractions.

Of course, you are right.

I didn't see how to turn that problem into a word problem on that page. Doesn't mean it's not there, I just didn't see it. She knows how to multiply the problem, it's coming up with a word problem that she can't see out of it. :)

A half a cake is sitting on the table. The kids come along and eat 3/4 of it. How much of the total cake did they eat?

Thank you so much, I had used something similar but with Pizza but apparently cake was more appealing when I explained it to her, so Thank you. Okay Now there is one that i can't even think of.........Write a Word Problem for..... 4/5 x 1/4 + 3/5 = 4/5 Sheesh! Any suggestions for me on this one?

Sure! Here's a word problem using the equation 3/4 x 1/2 = 3/8:

"Lisa is baking cookies for a family gathering. She has 3/4 cup of sugar and needs to use only half of it for the recipe. How much sugar does Lisa need to use for the cookies?"

To solve this problem, we need to multiply 3/4 by 1/2. Here's how you can explain it to your daughter:

1. Start with a model: Draw a rectangular shape to represent the total amount of sugar (3/4 cup) that Lisa has.

2. Divide the rectangle into four equal parts vertically to represent 4 quarters. Shade in three of the parts to represent 3/4 of a cup.

3. Now, divide one of the shaded parts horizontally into two equal pieces to represent dividing the sugar in half. Shade in one of the divided pieces to represent 1/2 of the 3/4 cup of sugar.

4. Ask your daughter to count the number of shaded pieces. She will see that there is 1 shaded piece, which represents 1/8 cup of sugar.

So, the answer to the word problem is: Lisa needs to use 1/8 cup of sugar for the cookies.

I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.
