Iron combines with oxygen and water from the air to form rust. If an iron nail were allowed to rust completely, one should find that the rust weighs:

I know the answer is the rust should way more than the nail it came from but can someone explain why please!

  1. Rust is Fe2O3.xH2O
    So rust is the combined weight of the iron nail you started with PLUS the weight of the oxygen added PLUS the weight of the water added.
