Bart's class is studying a unit on nutrition. Each student has chosen a topic on which to write a short essay. Bart wants to write about the benefits of eating certain types of chocolate. Which of these would make the best thesis statement for his paper?

A.
Eating dark chocolate is beneficial because it lowers blood pressure and has many healthy antioxidants.
B.
Chocolate is the best-tasting candy because it can be used in so many different and interesting ways.
C.
Of all the types of chocolate, people generally like dark chocolate the best because it is mixed with many fruits.
D.
Dark chocolate and other surprisingly healthy foods are recommended by doctors all the time.

I would choose A, if I knew I could find research to prove the point this is making.

B is arguable because it's based on opinion; others may or may not have the same opinion.

C and D are arguable, but you'd have a very hard time finding research to prove your point!!

Here's an excellent webpage to help you understand what is and what is not a thesis statement.

And you think ... ??

With which one(s) would other people argue? That's one of the best tests of what a thesis statement is and isn't. If it's arguable, it can be a thesis statement.

i don't think a would be arguable is that correct?

The best thesis statement for Bart's paper would be A. "Eating dark chocolate is beneficial because it lowers blood pressure and has many healthy antioxidants." This thesis statement clearly states the topic of the essay (the benefits of eating certain types of chocolate) and presents two specific benefits of eating dark chocolate (lowering blood pressure and having many healthy antioxidants). To find the answer, Bart should consider the topic of his essay (the benefits of eating certain types of chocolate) and the specific benefits he wants to discuss. By choosing A, Bart's thesis statement will effectively introduce his essay and guide the content of his paper.
