is 8square root 2 + 2square root 2 equal to 10square root 2?

Sorry, I don't know how to type that on my computer.

So 8 next to the square root symbol with 2 underneath it + 2 next to the square root symbol with 2 underneath it.

I'm thinking those are like terms so you can just add the 8 and 2 to make that 10 square root of 2?

Thank you.

is 8√2 + 2√2 = 10√2 ? Yes, just like

8apples + 2apples = 10apples
8 boys +2 boys = 10 boys
8x + 2x = 10x

I tried to answer this but don't know how to make a square root symbol. How do I do this?

a l t 251

Take out the spaces.

DrBob, on my Mac I press "option" V, on my PC , hold down the ALT key and press 251 on the numberpad, as Ms. Sue stated.

You can also open Word or something like that. There should be a symbol table and I know Word has the √ in that list. The just copy and paste it.
I actually created a Word file of common symbols used in math replies and keep it open in the background.

Thanks. I tried the alt 251 and can't get it to work on this forum. I can make it work in html with (& #8 730;). I thought it was too much trouble to do the copy and past bit on my pc so I've been just writing sqrt as in 8*sqrt 2 but I always thought that symbol was so much more elegant. Thanks to both of you for the help.

If answering a question that includes a mysterious symbol, copy it and paste it to your reply.

eg:

the √ in that list

Thanks. It's amazing what I could do if I used my brain now and then. :-)
