Hi, I really need help with my lead. My teacher told me to redo it because I need to have the 5W's and 1 H. I followed that it has to be under 20-30 words but, about Online Journalism. I know it's really bad but, its so hard to have the 5W's and 1 H in 20-30 words about Online Journalism! Can someone please help me? Thanks in Advance!

My old lead: Online journalists use the internet to cover different types of news and they’re able to work from home or can travel to cover news. Online journalists requires 4-year degrees minimum.

I need to know more about what you want to write before I can help you with a lead.

Basically, I'm writing about a career in Journalism that has interested me which is Online Journalism. I have to write a whole "news story" which is just an essay about my chosen career. I have to have a lead to hook the reader, and that's my difficulty. I already have sources I used therefore the information I've used in my lead.

The specific career is a part time online news source reporter which is still Online Journalism.

How about a questing?

Who wouldn’t want a job in which she could work from home ...
(You finish and / or change it.)

The traditional 5-W lead is a news lead. You're looking for more of a feature lead with a gimmick that will hook the reader. Your original question indicates that your teacher wants a traditional news lead.

Thank you to both of you for your help!

Sure, I can help you with that! Crafting a concise lead while including the 5W's and 1 H can be challenging, but it's definitely possible. Here's an example of how you could revise your old lead to meet the requirements:

Revised lead: Online journalism, which involves reporting news using the internet, allows journalists to cover diverse topics remotely or on-site. Minimal requirements for online journalists include a 4-year degree.

Let's break it down to see how each element is covered:

1. Who: "Online journalists" are mentioned.
2. What: "Online journalism" is the subject.
3. Where: The location isn't explicitly mentioned in this lead, but that's okay since it's not always essential. However, if the location is critical to your story, you can consider mentioning it.
4. When: The timeframe isn't explicitly mentioned here, but it's often not a requirement for a lead. However, if time specificity is essential, you can try incorporating it.
5. Why: The purpose is to highlight the nature and benefits of online journalism.
6. How: "Using the internet" specifies the medium and method.

Remember, leads are meant to be concise and grab the reader's attention while providing essential information. It's okay to omit certain details and save them for the body of your article. Additionally, you can fine-tune the revised lead to fit the specific focus of your article on online journalism.
