My mother and grandmother used to refer to the black-out conditions in Los Angeles about 13 months and more after the Pearl Harbor attack. The scare didn't go away easily.

Oh, yes. The scare didn't go away until after the war. Bunkers and gun emplacements can still be found along the coast at San Francisco, intended to defend against a Japanese invasion.

In January of 1942 my mother and I flew from Pearl Harbor to San Francisco. People in California were much more scared than those of us on Oahu.
