List your own example of turning an observation into a hypothesis. Be sure to list all five steps:

observation, explanation, test (independent variable), prediction (dependent variable), and
hypothesis.

Observation: I observed that plants in my garden that received more sunlight grew taller than those in shadier areas.

Explanation: I hypothesize that the amount of sunlight plants receive affects their growth.
Test (Independent Variable): I will manipulate the amount of sunlight by placing some plants in full sun and others in partial shade.
Prediction (Dependent Variable): I predict that the plants receiving more sunlight will grow taller than those in shadier areas.
Hypothesis: The hypothesis is that increased sunlight exposure will lead to increased plant growth.

Observation: I notice that my plants in the garden are not growing as tall as they usually do.

Explanation: I think that the lack of growth might be due to the soil being depleted of nutrients.

Test (Independent Variable): To test this hypothesis, I will add a fertilizer to one group of plants and leave another group without any additional nutrients.

Prediction (Dependent Variable): I predict that the plants that receive the fertilizer will grow taller than the ones without any additional nutrients.

Hypothesis: If adding fertilizer to the plants, then their growth will improve because the soil has been depleted of nutrients.

To summarize:
1. Observation: Plants in the garden are not growing as tall as usual.
2. Explanation: The soil may be lacking nutrients.
3. Test (Independent Variable): Add fertilizer to some plants and leave others without any additional nutrients.
4. Prediction (Dependent Variable): The plants with added fertilizer will grow taller than those without.
5. Hypothesis: Adding fertilizer to the plants will improve their growth due to soil nutrient depletion.

What is YOUR example?

this is my example

Observation
The trash smells.
Explanation
Decaying biological material causes the trash to smell.
Test (independent variable)
Add food scraps to one trash can along with non-food materials, such as plastic, cardboard, paper, and tin. To a second trash can, add only non-food materials, such as plastic, cardboard, paper, and tin. Observe the smell of each trash can over a few days.
Prediction (dependent variable)
The trash can containing food scraps will smell more than the trash can with non-food materials.
Hypothesis
If decaying matter causes the trash to smell, then removing food scraps from the trash will decrease the odor that it produces.
