I am looking at following question:

Anna is 1.8m tall and her pet flea is 1.8mm tall. How many times is Anna taller than her pet flea?

the answer of the book is 1.8x1000/1.8=1000

but I am afraid that it is not correct. it should be that Anna is 1000 times as tall as her pet flea, not 1000 times taller than her pet flea.

Am I right? cheers!

It is true that Anna is not 1000mm taller, but in this case, the "times" indicates a multiplicative factor, and almost no one would interpret it as you have indicated.

Hello! I understand your confusion with the wording of the question. Let's break it down to understand the correct interpretation.

The question asks how many times Anna is taller than her pet flea. To find the answer, we need to compare the heights of Anna and her pet flea.

Anna's height is given as 1.8m, and her pet flea's height is given as 1.8mm. To compare these measurements, we need to convert them to the same unit.

To convert 1.8m to millimeters, we multiply it by 1000 because there are 1000 millimeters in a meter. Therefore, Anna's height in millimeters would be 1.8m x 1000 = 1800mm.

Now that we have both heights in millimeters, we can determine how many times taller Anna is than her pet flea.

To find this, we divide Anna's height in millimeters (1800mm) by her pet flea's height in millimeters (1.8mm).

1800mm ÷ 1.8mm = 1000.

The result is 1000, which means that Anna is 1000 times taller than her pet flea, or more specifically, she is 1000 times the height of her pet flea.

So, you are correct! Anna is 1000 times as tall as her pet flea, not 1000 times taller than her pet flea.
