President Johnson, also known as Andrew Johnson, did not want rich, white southern landowners to return to power for several reasons. One of the main reasons was because he believed that these landowners, who had previously held positions of wealth and influence in the Confederacy during the Civil War, were responsible for the secession and subsequent war.

Furthermore, President Johnson opposed their return to power because he believed that they would try to regain control over the newly freed African-American population and suppress their rights. Johnson was committed to reconstruction efforts and granting civil rights to African Americans, and he feared that the wealthy landowners would impede progress towards equality.

Another factor influencing President Johnson's stance was his political alignment. Johnson, who was a Democrat, clashed with the Republican-controlled Congress over the direction of reconstruction. Republicans in Congress aimed to ensure a more radical approach to rebuilding the South and protecting the rights of African Americans, while Johnson preferred a more lenient and forgiving approach towards the former Confederate states.

To fully understand the nuances and intricacies of President Johnson's motivations, it would be essential to further explore the historical context and analyze his speeches, policies, and actions during his presidency.
