5x+3y=9x-7y
I am having trouble in solving. My answer is ending in fractions. And do far I have gotten y=-1/7
5x+3y=9x-7y
10y = 4x
y = 2x/5
Not sure what you mean by "solve".
Since you have 2 unknowns but only one equation, there is no unique solution.
by letting x equal multiples of 5, you will get whole integer solutions for both x and y.
e.g.
x = 5, y = 2
x = 10, y = 4
x = 15, y = 6
x = 0 , y = 0
x = -5, y = -2
etc
if you let x be a non-multiple of 5, you will indeed get fractions.
e.g.
x = 3, y = 6/5
etc
To solve the equation 5x + 3y = 9x - 7y for y, we can start by collecting the y terms on one side of the equation. Let's move the 7y term to the left side by adding 7y to both sides of the equation:
5x + 3y + 7y = 9x - 7y + 7y
Simplifying the equation:
5x + 10y = 9x
Next, let's move all the y terms to the right side of the equation by subtracting 10y from both sides:
5x + 10y - 10y = 9x - 10y
Simplifying the equation:
5x = 9x - 10y
To isolate the y term, we can subtract 9x from both sides:
5x - 9x = 9x - 10y - 9x
Simplifying the equation:
-4x = -10y
Now, let's divide both sides of the equation by -10 to solve for y:
(-4x) / (-10) = (-10y) / (-10)
Simplifying the equation:
2x/5 = y
So, the solution for y is:
y = 2x/5
Therefore, your answer, y = -1/7, is not correct. The correct answer is y = 2x/5, which is a fraction.
