Why do you think Columbus kept a private log of the miles the ships actually traveled?

One thought Columbus had was to record fewer miles per day traveled to prevent mutiny if they didn't reach land in the estimated time. That would give him some extra time to look for America. He was afraid that the crew would become disheartened so he purposely misled them as to actual distance traveled. When they got to the Islands they were told of the "big Island" to the west and to avoid some islands that were hostile. They were also able to bargain for food and fresh water.

So he can give hope to the crew because the crew was scared so Columbus had to lie about the actual distance traveled
