Excerpt from Douglas’s speech:

"I believe that the Union can only be preserved by maintaining inviolate the Constitution of the United States as our fathers have made it. That Constitution guarantees to the people of every State the right to have slavery or not have it…each State being left free to decide for itself. The framers of that Constitution…well understood that each one of the thirteen States had distinct and separate interests, and required distinct and separate local laws and local institutions."

—Stephen A. Douglas, Springfield, Illinois, June 17, 1858

I like how this went from "no do it on your own"/"we will help you with the work, not do the work for you" to advertising brainly

basically it went something like..

Lincoln: We should all unite together as one before this separation in our government becomes a problem.

Douglas: Each state should be able to do what seems fit for them since they have the right to.

if im wrong on anything be free to correct me

Dougles was for popular sovereignty, which says that states should decide if they want or do not want slavery.

In his speech he says the constitution guarantees that the people in different states have the right to have slavery or not.
The quote shows Douglas point of view because he was all for people having the right to choose if they wanted slavery or not
