Was China's one child policy only for Han Chinese or was it for everyone?

I have found lots of conflicting information on this.

Thank you!

Yes -- it only applied to the Han Chinese.

China's one-child policy was introduced in 1979 and officially applied to all Chinese citizens, regardless of their ethnicity. The policy was implemented as a response to concerns about overpopulation and its impact on the country's resources and economy. It aimed to limit China's population growth by restricting most urban couples to having only one child.

However, it is important to note that there were some exceptions and variations in the policy based on factors such as location and ethnicity. For example, rural families were often allowed to have a second child if the first child was a girl, primarily to support agricultural needs. Additionally, ethnic minorities were generally exempt from the policy, allowing them to have more than one child.

The implementation and enforcement of the one-child policy varied across different regions of China, which might be the reason for the conflicting information you found. It is important to consider both national regulations and local practices when studying the policy's impact.

To gather more accurate and detailed information about specific aspects of the one-child policy and its application to different groups, it is advisable to consult reliable sources such as academic research articles, government publications, or experts in the field.
