How would the history of the United States be different if Washington, D.C. Wasn't chosen as the nations Capitol?

What do you think? Why?

I thought it was New York. Did they move for some reason?

Gee, I thought it was Philadelphia!

I guess they kept hopping around. Democracy is wicked clumsy.

LOL! Studying history with you two is a riot!

Well, they did hop around a bit! Some think they should hop some more today and just go away!

I'm not sure! Can you give me some links or something that could help me?

for example:
The choice of Washington’s site along the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers resulted from a compromise between Alexander Hamilton and northern states who wanted the new federal government to assume Revolutionary War debts, and Thomas Jefferson and southern states who wanted the capital placed in a location friendly to slave-holding agricultural interests. - See more at: http://washington.org/DC-information/washington-dc-history#sthash.6bngo0vG.dpuf

Hey! No one knows how the history might have been different.

Your teacher wants YOU to synthesize what you've learned about Washington, D.C. and the history of our country and then offer YOUR best guess.

Okay, the District of Columbia was established on land ceded to the Federal government by Maryland and Virginia as a neutral spot to put the capital. To establish a permanent capital inside one of the states was thought to favor one section over another. Finally, Maryland (more or less) backed out of the deal, so it's in what was once Virginia, but that's another story. The first capital or seat of government was New York City, then they moved to Philadelphia until a whole new city could be created in Washington, District of Columbia, which is part of no state. The primary "industry" in Washington is the government, so it is theoretically neutral territory, not beholden to any section or any one state.
