can someone help me, please?? I answered it once but my teacher said I needed to revise it.

Here is the Question~~
4) Starting in New England and working your way south, describe how each region saw settlers coming for different reasons. Give at least two specific examples for each region to support your answers.

My Answer~~
The Puritans and the Pilgrims left England because they were being harassed. The Pilgrims wanted religious freedom, and the Puritans wanted to purify the Church of England; both groups came to the New World and created the New England colony. The Puritans had very strict laws, so there was not any freedom for religion. The Pilgrims on the other hand though were a little more accepting of different religions. For the people who wanted more religious freedom they moved further south. The Middle Colonies were founded for religious freedom and farming. The Middle Colonies were very accepting of religious freedom, they had many religions like, Quaker, Catholic, and Jewish religions were accepted in the Middle Colonies. The Southern Colonies were founded for farming, trading with England, and also for religious freedom.

This is what my teacher said~~
You did an excellent job in describing how religion as motivating factor for coming to a region lessened as you moved further south. But there were other things to consider when deciding on a region to settle in the new world.

Think of it this way if you were in England and you decided to take off across the ocean you would want to make sure you picked a place to settle that met your needs. If you were a tradesman where might you go? If you were a farmer where might you go? If you were comfortable with owning slaves and trading where might you go? If you wanted to live in a big city where might you go? These are all things to consider.

Your teacher is right. The Dutch in New Amsterdam were interested more in trade than religion. The southern colonies were more interested in agriculture than religion. You are right, though, that some colonies were more tolerant of religious diversity than others. Note, however, that Pennsylvania, while tolerant of other religions, was founded by Quakers and Penn actively recruited Quakers for settlement in Pennsylvania. Lord Baltimore established Maryland for Catholics. South Carolina tolerated every religion, except for a two-year period that was quickly abandoned. They were more interested in growing rice! Virginia was interested in growing tobacco for the English market.

Based on the feedback from your teacher, it seems that while you correctly identified religion as a motivating factor for settlers, you can further improve your answer by considering other factors that influenced the choice of settlement location. Here's how you can revise your answer:

1) New England: Settlers in New England came for religious reasons, but there were also other factors to consider. For example, if you were a tradesman looking for economic opportunities, you might settle in cities like Boston or Salem, which were bustling with trade and commerce. Additionally, if you were a farmer, you might consider settling in the fertile land of Connecticut River Valley for agricultural purposes.

2) Middle Colonies: While religious freedom was a significant factor, there were other considerations as well. If you were a farmer seeking good farmland, you might choose to settle in the region because of its rich soil and favorable climate. The Middle Colonies, such as Pennsylvania, were particularly attractive to traders and artisans due to their thriving ports and commercial centers like Philadelphia.

3) Southern Colonies: In addition to religious freedom, the Southern Colonies saw settlers coming for economic reasons. If you were comfortable with owning slaves and engaging in plantation agriculture, you might choose to settle in the Southern Colonies like Virginia or South Carolina. These colonies had a favorable climate for cash crops like tobacco and rice, and there was a strong demand for labor-intensive farming practices.

By considering these additional factors such as trade, farming, the presence of slaves, and the desire for a big city, you will provide a more comprehensive and accurate response to the question. Remember to include at least two specific examples for each region to support your answers.
