It says to convert 19.3 Inches to Centimeters.
How do I figure this out?
I know 1 Inch = 2.54 Centimeters..
The answer is 49.02 because I did online conversions but how do I arrive to my answer? What do you do?
It's hard to explain in writing but here goes.
19.3 inches x factor = ? cm
So your only problem is two fold; i.e.,
1. you must know the factor. You show it in this case as 1 inch = 2.54 cm
2. Decide which way to turn the factor; i.e. as (2.54 cm/1 in) or (1 in/2.54 cm).
So you have #1 but here is how you decide on #2. You make the unit you don't want cancel and leave the unit you want to keep.
If you multiply 19.3 in x (2.54 cm/1 in) you see the inch in the numerator cancels with the inch in the denominator and cm is what is left. That is what you want so this must be the correct way to place the factor. Look what happens if you invert the factor. You will get
19.3 in x (1 in/2.54 cm) = ? (inch^2/cm) which is not the unit you wanted.
