Oil and water is heterogeneous.

Salt dissolves completely in water; it is a solution. You can dip a spoon into oil and water and come up with different amount of oil and water with different dips. With a salt solution, each dip of the spoon brings out the same composition of salt and water. Look up on Google the composition of brass.
