An outdoor supply store has its regularly priced $160 jackets on sale for $120. What is the discount rate?

120/160*100=75% but that doesn't seem right. I believe it should be 25% discount, but I don't know how to set that up. Can someone tell me if the above is correct, if not, please help me set it up so I will get the correct answer.

100 - 25 = 75

so you took 25 off every hundred
In other words, 25% discount

another way to do it:
160 - 120 = 40 dollars discount

100 (40/160) = 25 %

thats the way i ended up doing it...thanks.

At a department store you purchase two items one for $129 and the other for $99 the cash register automatically adds the tax and displays total as $239.40 what is the sales tax rate as a percent?

To find the discount rate, you need to determine how much of a reduction the sale price represents compared to the original price.

To set up the calculation correctly, follow these steps:
1. Subtract the sale price from the original price: $160 - $120 = $40. This represents the amount of money you are saving.
2. Divide the amount saved by the original price: $40 / $160 = 0.25.
3. Multiply the result by 100 to convert it to a percentage: 0.25 * 100 = 25%.

Therefore, the discount rate for the jacket is 25%.
