I am writing a short paragraph using this as the beginning but not sure with sounds more right

Thus, I had time available for ease and relaxation. I used most of this time for hobbies and other activities. As I grew older, I took my time more seriously and used it wisely. I had become more sensible and mature. With so many responsibilities I had to strengthen and mature myself for practical, harsh and increasingly onerous life.
It reads comfortably, if that's what you need. I'm not sure how being nonchalant is imaginative, though, from this paragraph. Innocent, yes. You haven't demonstrated imagination.
