Create a compelling visual representation of the concept being explored in a question. The question is about the changes in a sound wave as it transitions from cool to warm air. The key elements to include would be graphic representations of cool and warm air, contrasting against each other, a symbolic sound wave transitioning between these two atmospheric conditions, and separate illustrations signifying the corresponding changes in speed, wavelength, and frequency. The image should not have any text. The focus should be on path B, meaning the speed and wavelength increase while the frequency decreases.

Which of the following statements correctly describes the changes that occur in a sound wave, as it passes from cool air into warmer air?

A) speed, wavelength and frequency all increase
B) speed, wavelength increase; frequency decreases
C) speed, wavelength increase; frequency unchanged
D) speed, frequency decrease; wavelength increases
E) Speed, frequency decrease; wavelength unchanged

I think it is B)

a deep canyon

is the answer

The answer is c

It is very hard for a wave to change frequency. You have to store some of the waves somewhere if you do that because in the end the same number must enter one end of the box as come out the other. Think ocean waves coming into a beach, They slow down in the shallow water so have to get closer together (shorter wavelength). If they changed frequency, where would the leftover crests go ? The same number of crests per hour come in from the sea as land on the beach.

C is the only choice with same frequency before or after

if the wave travels slower, the wavelength has to shorten and if the speed increases the wavelength has to lengthen to keep the frequency the same :)

By the way I went to some pain to elaborate on this because a scientist named Edward Teller (Google him) asked me that very question in a slightly different manner when I was interviewing for a fellowship many years ago. I gave him the answer I just gave you and he was happy :)

ah, as happy as he ever got that is.

ok thank so much!

To answer this question, we need to understand the properties of sound waves and how they change when passing from one medium to another.

When a sound wave passes from one medium to another, such as from cool air to warmer air, several changes can occur:

1. Speed: The speed of sound depends on the properties of the medium it is traveling through. In general, sound travels faster in warmer air compared to cooler air. Therefore, the speed of the sound wave will increase as it passes from cool air into warmer air.

2. Wavelength: The wavelength of a sound wave is the distance between two consecutive points that are in phase, such as two compressions or two rarefactions. The wavelength is inversely proportional to the frequency, meaning that as the frequency increases, the wavelength decreases. Since the speed of the sound wave increases in warmer air, and since the frequency remains unchanged, the wavelength will increase as the sound wave passes from cool air into warmer air.

3. Frequency: The frequency of a sound wave is the number of complete cycles that occur per unit of time. It is determined by the source of the sound and remains unchanged when the sound wave passes from one medium to another.

Now, let's analyze the given options:

A) Speed, wavelength, and frequency all increase: This is incorrect because the frequency of the sound wave remains unchanged when passing from cool air to warmer air.

B) Speed, wavelength increase; frequency decreases: This is also incorrect, as the frequency does not change when the sound wave passes from one medium to another.

C) Speed, wavelength increase; frequency unchanged: This statement correctly describes the changes that occur in a sound wave as it passes from cool air into warmer air. The speed of the sound wave increases, the wavelength increases, and the frequency remains unchanged.

D) Speed, frequency decreases; wavelength increases: This statement is incorrect because the frequency of the sound wave does not change.

E) Speed, frequency decreases; wavelength unchanged: This statement is incorrect because, as we established earlier, the wavelength increases when passing from cool air to warmer air.

Therefore, the correct answer is C) Speed, wavelength increase; frequency unchanged.
