Can someone tell me why 9-4^2 = -7?

because it will be 9-16 which will equal to -7 due to the fact that 9 is smaller than 16 and when you subtract a small number from a big number you get a negative number.

4^2 = 16

9 - 16 = -7

My explanation might be a little confusing but let me know if you need help. I might be able to explain it better. Or try using a calculator when you plug in 9-16 it will give you -7. why? because you are plugging 9 (small number)first and than the 16 (large number).

Oh okay thank you and I'm not suppose to use a calculator when doing this.

The expression 9-4^2 can be a bit confusing because of the order of operations. To solve this expression, we need to follow the rules of the order of operations, which is also known as PEMDAS (Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication and Division, and Addition and Subtraction) or BODMAS (Brackets, Orders (exponents), Division, Multiplication, Addition, and Subtraction).

Let's break it down step by step:

Step 1: Exponents
In this case, the exponent is 2, so we need to calculate it first.
4^2 = 4 * 4 = 16

Step 2: Subtraction
Now, we can subtract the result of the exponent from 9.
9 - 16 = -7

Therefore, 9-4^2 equals -7.
