A square picture 3 1/2 feet wide hung on the wall.

The center of it is to be 4 feet from the ceiling. The top picture is __ feet and ___ inches from the ceiling.

I really need help :(

I would advise drawing a diagram for problems like these, it really helps! Without a diagram though: if the picture is 3.5 feet wide and it is 4 ft to the center of the picture from the ceiling then you want to find the center of the picture first. For that take 3.5/2 and then subtract that number from 4 to find the distance from the top of the picture to the ceiling.

2 1/4 feet?

Yep! :)

Thanks a ton Harley!

I got 2 1/4, but it doesn't seem right.

draw out a diagram for it! also in feet and inches it would be 2ft 3inches

Then I must've drew it wrong.

And thanks for your help though :)

To find out how far the top of the picture is from the ceiling, we need to subtract half of the picture's width from the distance between the center of the picture and the ceiling.

Given:
Width of the square picture: 3 1/2 feet
Center of the picture to the ceiling: 4 feet

First, let's convert the width of the picture to a decimal format:
3 1/2 feet = 3.5 feet

Next, we can find how far the top of the picture is from the ceiling by subtracting half of the picture's width from the distance between the center and the ceiling:
4 feet - (1/2 * 3.5 feet)

To calculate the fraction, we multiply the denominator (2) by the whole number (1), which equals 2. We then add the numerator (1) to get 3. So, (1/2 * 3.5 feet) is equal to 1.75 feet.

Continuing the calculation:
4 feet - 1.75 feet

Subtracting 1.75 feet from 4 feet gives us:
2.25 feet

Now, let's convert this decimal answer to feet and inches format. Since there are 12 inches in a foot, we can multiply the decimal remainder (0.25) by 12 to find the equivalent number of inches:
0.25 * 12 = 3 inches

So, the top of the picture is 2 feet and 3 inches from the ceiling.
