i'm thinking of two numbers, x and y. The sum of 4x and 1 is y. The sum of y and twice x is 13. Find x and y.
y = 4 x + 1
y + 2 x = 13
so
4 x + 1 + 2 x = 13
6 x = 12
x = 2
then y = 4(2) + 1 = 9
y + 2 x = 13
so
4 x + 1 + 2 x = 13
6 x = 12
x = 2
then y = 4(2) + 1 = 9
