Visualize a spotless sandy beach under a summer sky, bordered by a sprawling parking lot filled with various cars. Some distance away from the parking lot is a small refreshment stand, festooned with vibrant banners and canopies, offering cold drinks and snacks. Create an invisible path drawn in the air denoting the shortest distance from the parking lot to the beach, and another path leading to the refreshment stand, symbolizing the distance Jason needs to walk. The scenery should be peaceful, unpopulated, and contain no textual content.

Jason wants to walk the shortest distance to get from the parking lot to the beach. a.How far is the spot on the beach from the parking lot? b. How far will he have to walk from the parking lot to get to the refreshment stand?

For this question you generally have to show your work (unless it's only for honors...)

For answer a, we'll use x for the unknown numbers. Because the triangle with the side of 32m and the triangle with the base of 18m share a side, x applies to both. So;
x/32 = 18/x
Cross multiply, and we get
x^2 = 576
Simplify...
_/x^2 = _/576
x = 24
And there's your answer for part a!
(Small note; _/ <- That's just how I write a square root. It's not division XD)

For part b, it's easier, assuming you remember the Pythagorean theorem (I sure as hell didn't for like three days XD)
For slight revision, the Pythagorean theorem is;
a^2 + b^2 = c^2
So...
24^2 + 32^2 = c^2
I forgot what it was called, but do whatever exponents tell you to do and...
576 + 1024 = c^2
Simplify...
1600 = c^2
So now that we know that, we can tell that c = the square root of 1600
c = 40
and that's the answer for b!

Hope these helped! (Or even made sense)

a. 24 meters

b. 32 meters
i guarantee 100%. i got this question right :)

thanks for the answers hehe

B is wrong, b is 40

chicken thank you so much, i havent been paying much attention but this made me realize I had to use the geometric mean to find that distance. i will try and use that in the future, thanks again. you know what they say, teach a man to fish...

what happened here lol

I just simply use mathportals right triangle calculator to find the missing side lengths. Quick and easy..

AMY wanta b mi IRS patner?

The answers are 24m and 32m
