Taylor baked a cake to serve after dinner.

Suppose she cut the cake into 8 equal size pieces and 6 people ate all the pieces. Explain how they could have divided the pieces so that everyone ate the same amount of cake. You make show your work in a drawing.

How do you work this out and get the answer?

look for common multiple of 6 and 8

6 = 2*3
8 = 2*2*2
so we need 2*2*2*3 = 24
so divide each of the 8 pieces by 3
then each piece is 1/24 of the pie
then give each person 4 of those or 4/24 or 1/6

thanks damon, can you help on this one as well please?

Suppose there are 2 pieces of the cake left over,but you don't know how many pieces were in the whole cake. Explain how you could find the number of pieces in the whole cake if Taylor told you 1/6 of the cake was left. You may show your work in a drawing.
How you get the answer and draw?

I did that one a few minutes ago.

I think that the answer is going to be the number 48

the answer for 2 is 48

1\6

To work out how to divide the cake into equal pieces, we need to find the common factor between the number of pieces (8) and the number of people (6).

First, let's list the factors of both 8 and 6:
Factors of 8: 1, 2, 4, 8
Factors of 6: 1, 2, 3, 6

To find the common factors, we look for numbers that appear in both lists. From the above lists, we can see that the only common factor between 8 and 6 is 2.

Since 2 is the common factor, we can divide the cake into 2 equal pieces. Then, each person can have 2 pieces of cake, and all 6 people will have the same amount.

Now, let's show this in a drawing.

Start with a circle to represent the whole cake. Divide the circle into 8 equal wedges radiating from the center. Now, divide each of these wedges into two equal pieces. Each person can have 2 wedges (which make one whole piece), and there will be enough for everyone to have the same amount.

The drawing would look like this:
_____

/
/__
/ \
2
_____

Each person would get one of these pieces. By dividing the cake into 8 pieces, then dividing each of those into 2, we have managed to find equal portions for each person.
