Life in the Fast Lane

Have you ever changed so much in life that you couldn’t possibly bare it? Well, that person is called a dynamic character, someone who changes throughout a drama. In the drama, “The Crucible,” by Arthur Miller there is one main character named John Proctor who changes from the beginning to the end.

In the beginning of the play, Act I, John Proctor starts off very confused to me, not sure what he really wants. For example, John regrets what he did and wants the truth about the affair out in the open, but doesn’t know how to approach the subject. The play continues, and John changes from confused to anger once Abigail tells him I know how you clutched my back behind your house and sweated like a stallion whenever I come near (pg.838). However, he yells to Abby, “Abby I may think of you softly from time to time. But I will cut off my hand before I’ll ever reach for you again. Wipe it out of mind. We never touched Abby (pg. 839).” Even though what happened happen, he doesn’t want Abigail to get the wrong feeling that he’s still in love with her. In Act III, he finally admits to having an affair with Abigail to the public in the courtroom scene. John curses in front of all to prove that what he is done is a sin and he repents. In Act IIII, when John confesses is when we see the last time we see the old John. An example is when he says, “” I have confessed myself! Is there no good penitence but it be public? God does not need my name nailed upon the church! God sees my name; God knows how black my sins are! It is enough (pg.886)!” He turns out to be a very honest, truthful character in the end.

All in all, John Proctor is considered such a dynamic character because he admits his mistake at the end of the play. Proctor learns his value of his name and reputation. Mainly, he changes the most throughout the play of all the characters. Plus he suffers the most consequences for his actions. “Nothing ventured, nothing gained” is a quote to end this, because he learned he can’t change his mistake unless he’s willing to take a risk to tell the truth.
