1) 400,000 = 4x10^5

2) 5412= 5.412x10^3

3) 0.00056= 5.6x10^-4

4) 0.0000814= 8.14x10^-5

    The power of 10 refers to the number of positions the decimal point has to be moved, not the number of zeroes.
    So for #2, it should be
    9.82000*100000=982000
    Similarly, for #3,
    9x10^3=9/1000=0.009
