1. Maria has the following scores in her mathematics class: 86 75 97 58 94 and 58

a: Find the mean median and mode
b: Should Maria's Mathematics class teacher use mean median or mode of the exam to convince Maria that she needs to study more regularly?

2. A researcher tagged 40 giant turtles in 2008. In 2009 she returned and captured 50 turtles, 16 of which were tagged. in 2010 she returned again and captured 30 turtles 8 of which were tagged.
a: Use a proportion to estimate the turtle population for 2009
b: Use a proportion to estimate the turtle population for 2010

3. You are surveying students to find out their opinion of the quality of food served in the school cafeteria. You decide to poll only those students who buy hot lunch on a particular day. Is the sample random? Explain.

2)

organize your information...

tagged

*2008: 40

*2009: 16

*2010: 8

total caught

*2009: 50

*2010: 30

Now, you can compare them. Like so, let's use the first one. You can compare the ratio of 16/40 = 50 / x

where x is the total population

so basically the proportion above represents that 16 of the 40 tagged were caught and it relates proportionately to the number of turtles caught out of the entire population of turtles that were currently there in 2009.

Now, you can cross multiply to get this...

16/40= 50/x

16x = 2000

then divide by 16

x = 125

125 represents the total population

Set up the other proportion just likes this and you should be able to get the population for 2010 as well. There are other ways to set it up though if you want to experiment on your own.

Hope this helped.

Anonymous, im with ya, i read this and had to walk away. There is no possible way i could ever put that in my own words. Im already a very slow learner. And these answers are not helping at all LOL. And plus a lot is going own because i just lost my granddad. I NEED HELP!!!!!!!

sorry for your lost and i think its a year late to say it πŸ•πŸ•πŸ•πŸŸπŸŸπŸŸπŸ•πŸ•πŸ•πŸŸπŸŸπŸŸπŸŸπŸŸ

uh.....…….. ok

3)

Your poll isn't random because you have selected a particular day and particular studet (one who purchases hot lunch) their opinion. By doing so this will skew or make the poll inaccurate because only a certain group of people on a certain day were asked their opinions. Instead a sample grouping should have been made allowing for different types of people (ex. type of people who bring home lunch sometimes or all the time) over the course of many days to be polled allowing for greater accuracy and insurance of randomness in the poll.

Here are how to find your answers

1)

*Mode: Which score occurs the most (which one repeats the most - ex. = 1,1,1,2,2,3 = since 1 is repeated three times this makes it the number that repeats most so it is the mode of the set)

*Median: Place the numbers in order from smallest to largest and then cross out numbers from each end until you get to the middle (ex: 1,2,3,4,5 = 2,3,4 = 3 so the median in this set is 3)

*Mean: Just add up all the numbers and divide them by how many numbers there are (ex. 1,2,3,4,5,6 - sum = 42, 42/6= 7 so the mean is 7 since their total sum is 42 and the total amount of numbers is 6)

You can compare the numbers you got from solving these aspects and see which one is the lowest because that is the one the teacher will need to use to convince Maria.
