The Mughal conquerors who ruled India from the 16th to the 19th centuries primarily followed the religion of Islam. The Mughal Empire was founded by Babur, who was an Islamic ruler. The successive Mughal emperors, including Akbar, Jahangir, Shah Jahan, and Aurangzeb, also embraced Islam and actively promoted it throughout their reigns. Islam became the dominant religion within the Mughal court and administration, although there were policies of religious tolerance and acceptance of other faiths as well.
