The best way to create self-esteem is to teach children well so they LEARN what they need to learn and experience success. Intrinsic self-esteem is far better than the false self-esteem (based on no achievements at all) touted by so many in the schools these days.
Here's why I say this: I was teaching the basic freshman English class for several years, and what I noticed was a large number of students who had graduated from local high schools, had high self-esteem, but who had low reading, comprehension, writing, and thinking skills. All that manufactured self-esteem stuff had set them up for failure ... and what a shame. =(
Some students slaved away during that course and made progress, but most gave up and dropped out. I counseled as many as possible to get into the college's basic reading and comprehension classes before trying the freshman Eng class again. Some did; most didn't.
What a terrible thing done to these students. Instead of teaching them what they needed to know and learn how to do, some of their teachers were wasting a lot of time on this false stuff. What a disgrace.
I had a student once in 9th grade algebra class, just totally lost, mainly, for lack of 5th grade math skills. She was failing terribly, just totally lost. I called her dad in, and went over her work, and skllls. He stated to me that he was damned tired of going over this every year with teachers, she was to young to fail.
I will never forget that. He had been haranguing math teachers for years, setting up his daughter for a massive failure, and the schools went along with it....she had all A's and B's in the past, in math.
Success is the best way to breed success and esteem, and success requires hard work, and a few tears. I am not so keen on proclaiming success when it is not there, I agree it does not benefit the student long term.
