What is the solution to the proportion 3y-8/12=y/5?
can someone help me do this?

• Proportions -

please someone tell me how to solve this. im very confused and im homeschooled so my teachers are no help and my mom cant do math. please please help!!!

• Proportions -

y=5/21

• Proportions -

thanks Dylan. but howd you get that?

• Proportions -

for any proportion, you can cross-multipy, that is

(3y-8)(5) = (12)(y)
15y - 40 = 12y
15y-12y = 40
3y = 40
y = 40/3 or 13 1/3

ok im gonna go with Reiny's answer. thanks for breaking it down so I could see how you got the answer :)

• Proportions -

You can always check any answer by simply subbing the answer back in the original equation, and use your calculator to compare the left side and the right side of the original equation.

It just depends on how the problem is actually written.

Is 3y-8 all over 12 or is 8 just over 12?

Because I solved 3y - (8/12) = (y/5), not [(3y-8)/12]= (y/5)...its just all in how you type your question.

• Proportions -

I assumed that Corie skipped the brackets, and he meant (3y-8)/12.
The fact that is was called a "proportion" gave me that clue.

• Proportions -

there were no brackets it was just written out as this well on mine it was.
3y-8/12=y/5
if anyone can help me id gladly appreciate it thankz

Am I the only one that finds it funny how the person telling someone to pay attention to class and work has no idea how to type proper English? Seems to me like there should be less criticism coming from someone who should pay more attention on English class than on bashing other people.

this boi said cheatin lil chicken headz...bruhh im done

kalawalashaundra i think u need to listen to your English teacher

• Proportions -

Lmao this is too funny

• Proportions -

I found this place on my sister's history. Maybe English isn't his first language, and he has only just started to learn it.

• Proportions -

the best part is to find the question kalawalashaundra had to look it up meaning she cheats too. She wants to criticize about cheating but at least Corie can spell lol
