ms. sue i want to be clear on two more questions.

about this man sitting on the step with suitcase, that be because he be leaving somewhere, but i not get why he be mentioned? to escape from bad neighbourhood?

also i not get what recrimination mean. to describe their marriage i not know what to say. that wife love him a lot, but she get mad and angry at him also?

also there just be the color black used in the story? i not find any other colors. He just describe everything dark.

And in this para

There have been no trees or drifting leaves, no stands covered in produce,
no salmon tins, but time has run away with him. His wife, he realizes, will have returned from bridge, his children gathered for supper. He also knows that, at first, they have explained his absence on a neighbour’s hospitality and gin. However, by the time he can return, annoyance will have blossomed into alarm. His safe return will, he knows from childhood and years of being locked in domestic grief, degenerate to recriminations and apology

i not really get where this para tie n wid earlier 1 in story. he still in memories?

about this man sitting on the step with suitcase, that be because he be leaving somewhere, but i not get why he be mentioned? to escape from bad neighbourhood?

Recrimination means blame. She blames him and wants him to feel guilty about the things she thinks are wrong with him.

I'm not sure about this -- but I think the man with the suitcase means he is leaving to escape this neighborhood.

Black is the color of sadness and bad things.

It sounds like he's depressed and feels that he can't do anything right.

thanks very much ms. sue :)

Regarding the man sitting on the step with a suitcase, the mention of him implies that he is leaving somewhere. It can suggest that he is trying to escape from a bad neighborhood, but without more context, it's hard to say for sure. To fully understand his situation, you may need more information from the story or ask the author directly.

Now, let's talk about the term "recrimination." Recrimination refers to the act of accusing someone of a wrongdoing in response to being accused yourself. In the context of the story, it means that the wife loves her husband a lot, but she also gets angry at him and blames him for certain things. Their relationship seems to involve a mix of affection and conflict.

As for the use of color in the story, you mentioned that only the color black is used. If the author only describes everything as dark or black, it might symbolize a somber or negative atmosphere. This color choice can contribute to the overall mood and tone of the story. However, it's always a good idea to check for any possible symbolism by examining the context and themes in the story.

Regarding the paragraph you mentioned, it seems to tie back to the earlier part of the story in the sense that the man is reflecting on the consequences of his absence. It suggests that he knows his wife and children will be worried and upset when he returns late. He anticipates facing recriminations (accusations or blaming) and the need to apologize for causing them distress. It appears that the paragraph is focusing on the man's emotions and past experiences, emphasizing the potential negative repercussions of his actions.
