My sub teacher today gave us a time problem on our homework. We haven't worked with time yet so I'm not quite sure I got it right:

Ed started work at 8:45 AM. He stopped for lunch at 12:00 PM and went back to work at 12:45 PM. He quit for the day at 6:15 PM. How long did Ed work this day?
I got 9 hr 85 min to start which is incorrect. I was then unsure if what to do next so I subtracted 985 from 60 and got 25 so I assumed I would do the same process as when you are simplifiying fractions (1 8/7 - 2 1/8) Please Explain.

Sorry. I meant Ms. Sue. My bad ...

Here's how I'd tackle this problem.

8:45 is 15 minutes before 9:00. 9:00 to 12:00 = 3 hours. 3 + 15 = 3:15

12:45 is 15 minutes for 1:00. 1:00 to 6:00 = 5 hours. 5 hours + 30 minutes = 5:30

5:30 + 3:15 = 8:45 = 8 hours and 45 minutes.

the answer is 5:30 hours

To solve this problem, we need to calculate the total time Ed worked during the day. Let's break it down step by step:

1. First, we need to find the time Ed worked before lunch. He started work at 8:45 AM and took a lunch break at 12:00 PM. To find the time duration, we subtract the start time from the lunch break time:
12:00 PM - 8:45 AM

To make the calculation easier, we can convert both times to a 24-hour format. 8:45 AM is equivalent to 08:45 and 12:00 PM is equivalent to 12:00.

12:00 - 08:45 = 03:15

So, Ed worked for 3 hours and 15 minutes before lunch.

2. Next, we need to find the time Ed worked after lunch. He resumed work at 12:45 PM and finished for the day at 6:15 PM. Again, we calculate the time duration by subtracting the start time from the end time:
06:15 PM - 12:45 PM

To make the calculation easier, we can convert both times to a 24-hour format. 06:15 PM is equivalent to 18:15 and 12:45 PM is equivalent to 12:45.

18:15 - 12:45 = 05:30

So, Ed worked for 5 hours and 30 minutes after lunch.

3. Finally, we add the time worked before lunch to the time worked after lunch to find the total duration:
3 hours 15 minutes + 5 hours 30 minutes

When adding time, we add the hours separately and then the minutes separately:
3 hours + 5 hours = 8 hours
15 minutes + 30 minutes = 45 minutes

Therefore, Ed worked for a total of 8 hours and 45 minutes on that day.

To summarize, Ed worked for 3 hours and 15 minutes before lunch and 5 hours and 30 minutes after lunch, resulting in a total work time of 8 hours and 45 minutes.
