i know it means one team wins and the other loses i just cant figure out the verb tense

    It´s better to say:

    Mientras un equipo pierde, el otro gana.

    Because "gana" is in the Present Indicative, so is the verb "perder." BUT the verb "perder" is a stem-changing verb from e--->ie. The form you need is "pierde"
