what is symbolic reasoning?

"symbolic reasoning" means using symbols to aid in solving (reasoning) problems.
For example:
1. After learning addition and substraction, first graders are asked, "What number must be added to 2 to make it equal 5?" They can understand something like this
2 + ? = 5
