What is a modern example of limited government? The only things I can think of are the US Constitution and Magna Carta but they don't count as modern.

A current example of limited government is the prohibitions against putting gps systems on cars or tapping phones.

The prohibition is against police or other governmental bodies from putting these systems in place.

Thank you, this is what I needed. (Also I didn't mean to post the question a second time my computer told me I had an error posting it so I reposted it.)

You're welcome.

A modern example of limited government is the European Union (EU). The EU is an intergovernmental organization comprising 27 member states in Europe. It was created with the aim of promoting peace, stability, and economic cooperation among European countries.

To understand why the EU can be considered an example of limited government, we need to look at its institutional structure and the limitations it imposes on its member states. The EU operates on the principle of conferral, meaning that member states voluntarily delegate some of their sovereignty to EU institutions in specific policy areas. This delegation of power is carefully defined and limited by the EU treaties.

For example, the EU has established a single market, which allows for free movement of goods, services, capital, and people within its borders. However, the EU's power to regulate economic activities is limited to areas designated in the treaties, such as competition policy, trade, and the common agricultural policy.

Furthermore, the EU has a system of shared decision-making, where decisions are taken collectively by the European Council (comprised of the heads of state or government of member countries) and the Council of the European Union (representing the national governments), as well as the European Parliament and the European Commission.

The EU's powers are essentially limited to the areas explicitly outlined in the treaties. Member states retain significant control over other policy areas, such as defense, taxation, social security, and education, which are largely within the domain of national governments.

In summary, the EU demonstrates limited government by establishing specific areas of policy over which it has authority, while leaving other matters to the discretion of individual member states.
