Hi I have to write a short paper connecting The United States Declaration of Independence and how it plays a role in todays world. What are some connections that I could write about? Thanks!

Does our present government act is if all men are created equal?

Does it promote life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness?

Keep going by reading the Declaration of Independence carefully and thoughtfully.

You might also connect the Declaration with the Arab Spring, Occupy, or Tea Party movements.

Does this sound like a good opening and thanks that helped me!

When reading The Declaration of Independence, the phrase that resonated with me most was that “all men are created equal and that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, which are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” It’s a nice sentiment that sounds promising, but how realistic is it actually?

Yes. That's a good start.

I assume in the rest of your essay that you're going to cite ways that that sentiment is not realistic.

Yeh i was thinking, about writing about how the government is impartial to legalization of marriage or certain drugs, and if all men are equal then why are some not allowed to do some things they want to, why wont the government let them?

Just for fun sometimes I pick out one of the gripes about King George that Jefferson expressed and see how we are doing.

For example:

"He has erected a multitude of new offices, and sent hither swarms of officers to harass our people, and eat out their substance. "

Can you think of any relatively new federal agencies that might be perceived to be hiring more and more officers to irritate Americans and cost them money?

you mean like gas companies?

Connecting The United States Declaration of Independence to its role in today's world provides a fascinating topic for your short paper. Here are a few connections you could consider:

1. Equality and Human Rights: The Declaration of Independence upholds the ideals of equality and human rights. Explore how these principles are still relevant today by examining various social justice movements, such as the fight for gender equality, racial equality, LGBTQ rights, and the rights of marginalized communities. Discuss the impact of the declaration's principles on these movements and how they shape our understanding of human rights today.

2. Democracy and Self-Government: The declaration emphasizes the idea of self-government and the consent of the governed. Analyze the role of democracy in modern society, both within the United States and around the world. Discuss how the principles of the declaration have influenced the formation of democratic governments globally, and how they continue to shape political systems and processes today.

3. Individual Liberty and Personal Freedom: The declaration highlights the importance of individual liberty and personal freedom as fundamental rights. Examine how these principles are reflected in contemporary debates around issues like freedom of speech, privacy rights, and civil liberties. Explore how the declaration's ideas have shaped legal frameworks and societal expectations regarding individual freedoms.

4. International Influence and Humanitarianism: The declaration's ideas have had a global impact beyond the United States. Investigate how other nations' declarations, constitutions, and human rights documents draw inspiration from the United States' Declaration of Independence. Discuss the role of the United States as a champion of human rights and its influence on international organizations like the United Nations in promoting the shared values of freedom and equality.
