Her position in life was defined by her father or her husband and she was expected to be modest, submissive and incapable of independent thought. With few exceptions, their education was inferior to their male contemporaries.

4) She possesses wit, intelligence and an independece of thought that sets her apart, even from the elder sister. Her strength of character is matched by her insight and sensitivity. Like Jane Austen herself, she believes that in order to aspire to equality, women should devote their energies to reason and independent thought.
