Using the information about John, Jason, and Julie, can you uniquely determine how they stand with respect to each other? On what basis?

Statement 1: John and Jason are standing 12 feet apart.
Statement 2: Julie is standing 31º NW of Jason.
Statement 3: John is standing 49º SW of Julie.

Statements 2 and 3 don't make sense to me. A NW direction is not 31 degrees and a SW direction is not 49 degrees.

That is the question. I don't get it either.

If NW does not mean exactly 45 degrees W of N, and SW does not mean exactly 45 degrees W of S, then the 31 degree and 49 degree angles imply that the angle at Julie's corner is 80 degrees. All you have is one side and one angle. That does not determine the complete triangle.

i think that the 31 and 49 are the angle measures and the NW and SW are just what direction its pointed toward :)

To determine how John, Jason, and Julie stand with respect to each other, we can use the given information from three statements.

First, let's visualize the situation based on the given information:

- Statement 1 tells us that John and Jason are standing 12 feet apart. We can assume they are on a straight line, with John on one end and Jason on the other.

- Statement 2 states that Julie is standing at a 31º NW (northwest) angle from Jason. This means that if we draw a line from Jason in a northwest direction, Julie would be positioned at a 31º angle from that line.

- Statement 3 states that John is standing at a 49º SW (southwest) angle from Julie. This means that if we draw a line from Julie in a southwest direction, John would be positioned at a 49º angle from that line.

Now, let's interpret the given information:

- Since John and Jason are standing 12 feet apart, we know their relative position along a straight line.

- Based on Statement 2, Julie's position is determined as she is at a 31º angle northwest of Jason.

- Based on Statement 3, John's position is determined as he is at a 49º angle southwest of Julie.

Therefore, using the given information, we can uniquely determine how John, Jason, and Julie stand with respect to each other.
