Is X the same as x?

Note that
(x^2-4)/(2x^2-8x-10)
= (1/2)(x+2)(x-2)/ (x^2 -4x -5)
= (1/2)(x+2)(x-2)/[(x-5)(x-1)]

That may help you cancel some terms elsewhere.
