i know size adjectives come before nouns in french, but what if it's in a metaphorical sense? (for example, short life--would it be vie courte or courte vie?)

    This would depend upon how strong you would like to make it!
    la vie courte = a SHORT life (emphasis)
    la courte vie = the short life
