What is meant by the term the clash of civilizations? There is so much about this topic when u google search it. What is a brief overview about it.

Clash of civilizations means when two different civilizations or cultures meet. Each culture has its own customs, religion, ideals, and language.

When they meet, sometimes it's fairly peaceful, with few "clashes." They trade goods and ideas. Other times the clash is violent as in wars. Alexander the Great spread Greek culture throughout part of Asia. Sometimes the people accepted him and adopted some Greek customs. But other times, they resisted Alexander and his army, and there was war, often with Alexander as the victor.

Thank You Ms. Sue!!!

You're welcome, Courtney.

The term "clash of civilizations" is a concept coined by political scientist Samuel P. Huntington in his 1993 article and later expanded upon in his 1996 book titled "The Clash of Civilizations and the Remaking of World Order." It refers to the idea that future conflicts and tensions in the world will primarily stem from cultural and religious differences between different civilizations rather than ideological or economic factors.

Huntington argued that the end of the Cold War would lead to a shift in international relations from ideological conflicts (such as capitalism versus communism) to cultural and religious clashes. He divided the world into seven major civilizations, including Western, Islamic, Confucian, Japanese, Hindu, Slavic-Orthodox, and African civilizations, which he believed would become the main sources of conflict.

It is important to note that Huntington's thesis has gained both popularity and criticism over the years. Some argue that it simplifies complex global dynamics and oversimplifies the causes of conflict. Critics also suggest that cultures are not monolithic entities, and clashes often occur within civilizations rather than between them.

To delve deeper into the topic and form your own understanding, I suggest reading Huntington's original article or his book. Additionally, exploring various perspectives and criticisms through academic journals, scholarly books, or reputable online sources can provide a more comprehensive understanding of the clash of civilizations theory.
