Try your team's (17, -8) answer in the original equations and you will realize it doesn't work.
Add the two equations together and you eliminate the x term, and get
7y = 42
which leads to y = 6
Since 7x = 15 - 6y,
7x = 15 - 36 = -21
x = -3
